Shifty, punchy peaks contested along Perth's metropolitan coastline

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 June, 2017 - Western Australia's best young surfers have impressed in challenging, but highly contestable conditions at Trigg Beach over the weekend for the second event of the WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart.

A last minute event relocation didn’t hinder star-studded field of WA’s future surfing stars, as they battled a through a marathon two day event. Shifty and punchy peaks in the 3-4 feet (2.0metre) range provided ample scoring opportunity along the Perth metropolitan coastline. South-West surfers that adapted best to the conditions, winning six of the seven divisions contested.

Margaret River's Seth Van Haeften and Yallingup’s Emma Cattlin captured the first State Championship of 2017 with back-to-back victories in the Under-16 Boys and Under-16 Girls divisions respectively.

Margaret River’s Jack Haslau surfed with great flow and innovation to take out the blue ribbon Under-18 Junior Boys final. After a disappointing opening event of the series on home soil, Haslau answered back with an impressive display that included strong rail turns and big aerial manoeuvres.

Haslau posted a combined total of 17.36 (from a possible 20) to claim victory ahead of Josh Cattlin (Yallingup), Cyrus Cox (Margaret River) and Jolan Bonelli (Margaret River).

"These conditions sort of suit my surfing so I was pretty happy the comp was held here," said Haslau. "This is my first State Title win so I’m stoked to be moving up the ratings."

Yallingup’s Emma Cattlin was the standout surfer of the event, capturing a double victory in the Under-16 Cadet Girls and Under-18 Junior Girls divisions.

Dropping some of the highest scores of the weekend, Cattlin was explosive on her backhand sending massive fans of spray on every turn.

“To win the 16’s State Title is dream come true, I can’t believe it,” said Cattlin.  “It’s was surprising how good the conditions were and I really enjoyed competing in both divisions.”

Seth Van Haeften (Margaret River) used powerful carves to take out a closely fought Under-16 Cadet Boys final. In one of the most hotly contested division of the event, Van Haeften took down three form surfers; Jed Gradisen (Gracetown), Josh Stanton (Geraldton) and Finn Cox (Margaret River) to capture the State Championship.

"It was so close out there and all the boys were surfing so good that I was really nervous," said Van Haeften. "It was my goal to be State Champion and I’m looking forward to National Titles."

Daniel Benedetti (Margaret River) won his first ever competition, dominating the Under-14 Grommet Boys final.  Linking together a series of technical and stylish turns, Benedetti edged out Solomon Pogue-Englert (Gracetown), Jay Robinson (Dunsborough) and George Simpson (Gracetown).

"This is the first comp I’ve won and I’m really happy right now," said Benedetti  "I went to the National Titles last year and I want to get back there again."

In other results from the weekend, Zali Hewson (Margaret River) claimed her maiden win at the WA Junior Surfing Titles, taking out the Under-14 Grommet Girls division. Hewson couldn't wipe the smile off her face finishing ahead of Willow Hardy (Margaret River), Ruby Berry (Margaret River) and Daisy Miller (Scarborough).

Macklin Flynn (Mandurah) took out an enthralling and entertaining Under-12 Micro Groms final. Showing the future of WA surfing is in safe hands; Flynn threw down high-speed turns, scoring a heat high 8.17 (from a possible 10) on his best wave.

Flynn finished ahead of fellow Mandurah ripper Maverick Wilson, Otis North (Dunsborough) and Ryder Vernon (Yallingup).

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks acknowledged all competitors, parents, officials and supporters who made the weekend a resounding success.

“Surfing Western Australia's first and foremost priority is to provide our members and competitors with the safest and fairest conditions possible,” said Majeks. “The shift to Trigg Beach provided our juniors with a some great waves and I congratulate our first State Champions of the year.”

Attentions now turn to the third and final event of the WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart, which will be held north to Geraldton on the 15th - 16th July.
