Miguel Pupo surfed well above the field on the second day of action
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 January, 2018 - As expected, a strong South-West wind came up with the building swell and messed up conditions on the second day of action. However surfers managed to exploit the lineup perfectly and dig out the cleanest sections.
Long time Championship Tour surfer Miguel Pupo (BRA) was in a dominant form and fired up in the short-period shoulder high surf. The Brazilian surfed the longest waves and managed to display his fast, dynamic surfing to post an impressive 17.40 heat total for his spot into Round Two.
“Waves were fun, definitely bigger than the last few days and I’m excited to be here and competing in this new season!” Pupo said. “Pipe finished late so I only really had like five days of holidays but it was nice. I started training on January 1st, in Brazil we like to eat a lot during the holidays so I had my work cut out for me in trying to lose a few pounds before coming here!”
Israeli up-and-comer Tal Asayag (ISR) took out his Round One heat with a convincing effort against three longtime European competitors. The 22 year-old from Ashdod, just south of Tel Aviv, looked extremely excited to have the opportunity to surf in the event, and paddled for just about every wave that rolled his way. With a 6.83 for a forehand rotation and a decent backup, Asayag’s win was well deserved and he’ll be expected to perform again in the second round.
“I was really excited but a little nervous to be with such high-level surfers in the water,” Asayag said. “Basically my strategy was to look at what the other guys were doing and trying to do the same. I want to go as far as possible in this event, and hopefully finish the highest ranked Israeli surfer.”
The last two heats were also won by Israelis, former junior competitor Ely Cassirer (ISR) and 15 year-old Amir Rafaeli (ISR) in the final heat of the day.
